Healthcare skill development programme to benefit the youth of Kolkata

Kolkata-based hospital Medica has teamed up with HED healthcare and GE healthcare to start a healthcare skill development programme to benefit the state’s youth. The programme will focus on imparting know-how on how to operate doppler, MRI, CT scan, X-ray and other high-end radio-diagnostic equipment. The programme, which was launched on Sunday, will benefit youth from the lower strata of society, said Dr Sanjay Kumar, medical director of Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Ranchi. Director (operations) of HED healthcare Bhairavi Sonowal said a statewide widespread network will be set up to involve students from rural and semi-urban areas.

Data on the shortfall of skilled technicians in the health sector is unavailable. However, a national survey by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) stated that the manpower shortage in India stood at 64.1 lakh for paramedical staff), 20.42 lakh for dental assistance-related technologies, 8.58 lakh for surgery and anesthesia-related professionals, 2.38 lakh for medical technologists, 61,670 for laboratory technicians and 19,217 for radiography and imaging experts.Under the programme, long and short-term courses are likely to begin in March.
