A win-win situation in the sector of skill development if training providers and private sectors join hands

The Karnataka German Technical Training Institute (KGTTI) aims to hone the skills of youngsters to make them industry-ready after their formal education. It has been established in different parts of the State, including Mangaluru, by the Karnataka German Multi Skill Development Centre.

Antonius Peter Jax, German Skill Development Expert stated that skill development is high on the agenda of developing countries even as it has become a real challenge in the world to run the economy, at an interaction programme organized by KCCI, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He said that a company would stand to gain in terms of cost effectiveness when it hires a skilled person.

Mr. Jax said that the private sector and training provider should join hands for a win-win situation as the former would fill the vacant positions with skilled workers while the latter would have complete placement of trainees. Though India has several ITIs, there is a need for high skill development in companies that offer higher wage programmes, he felt.

Inaugurating the interaction where KCCI president Rammohan Pai Maroor, vice-president Jeevan Saldanha and secretary Vathika Pai were present., Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said that the skill development programme would further enhance employability of people from the region, who are already the preferred choice among a majority of employers. The world is fast changing and there is a need for constant upgrading of the knowledge base, he said.

Anil Bhandary, State team leader of German International Services (GIZ-IS), which is the technical partner of the KGTTI, said that the Mangaluru centre would soon get relocated to its own premises on the Government Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) premises on Kadri Hills. At present, the institute is functioning at the Government ITI for Women building in Kadri.

When he sought suggestions from the audience about improving the courses offered, those present suggested that a course on renewable energy, which, at present, is a fast-developing sector, can be included.
