Skill development and skill training should convert youth to human resource powerhouse

Observing that the skill development was crucial to converting a country of unemployed youth into a human resource powerhouse, Members in the Lok Sabha today contended that skill development must be followed by job placement.

“When we talk of skill development we cannot confine to talking only of skill development, we must also talk of providing jobs to those who have acquired the skills,” said Congress Member from Hingoli Rajeev Shankarrao Satav, initiating the discussion on Demand of Grants of Ministry of Skill Development. He said the statistics have shown that ever since this Ministry was formed, nearly 8.6 lakh persons got skill development training, but only 70,000 got jobs.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisaged 1 crore jobs a year in his elections promise, but if we are giving jobs to only 5 lakh a year than the unemployment of skilled and non skilled will come to an end in not less than 20 years,” Mr Satav said. “Instead of Rs 1000 crore, the budgetary allocation should have been at Rs 20,000 crore. The minister should have powers across board, especially a say in placement of the trained in the sectors under other ministries.

There should also be a standing committee on the Ministry for a target oriented performance,” Mr Satav said. Countering Congress Member’s claims, BJP’s Kota Member Om Birla said in Congress time the unemployment has been colossal as CAG(Comptroller & Accountant General) has pointed out number of times. Mr Birla said the Government should open as many Industrial Training Institutes(ITIs) as possible in small towns so that every youth in the countryside can benefit.

“Our aim should be to convert our unemployed youth into a human resource powerhouse of the world,” he said. All India Trinamool Congress Member from Purulia, Mriganka Mahato suggested the need based training to the youth from their respective regions. For instance, places like Darjeeling or Rajasthan where tourism is major source of earning, the youth should be provided foreign language training so that they can get decent job without leaving their native place, he said.
