New Zealand government promised additional 14 Million Dollars for Apprenticeship Training

New Zealand : The Motor Trade Association (MTA) is welcoming the government’s announcement of two tranches of additional investment in apprenticeship training – one for general training and one for Maori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT).

MTA Acting Chief Executive Craig Pomare said MTA understands there could be as many as 2,000 vacancies for qualified automotive technicians nationwide. “Many general repair MTA workshops could easily employ another one or two mechanics but there are none available. Some businesses are able to employ overseas qualified mechanics but it would be great to build up the number of Kiwi trained apprentices,” he said.

Demographically, the industry as a whole is predominantly NZ European. MTA is keen to see the industry reflect the diverse make-up of the New Zealand population. Resources to increase the number of Maori and Pasifika apprentices is welcome. The government has promised an additional $14.4m over four years for more apprenticeship training across all trades, and $9.6m for MPTT also over four years.
