Skill Development program for ‘Rural Hand-loom Artisan’ concluded

Leh : Organized by Sheep Husbandry Department Leh, the three month short term training programme for skill development of rural handloom artisan in Ladakh with the support of District Administration Leh and Center Wool Development Board, Jodpur concluded recently at Circuit House Leh. The concluding function was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G as a chief guest. Other who attended the function were Councilor Phyang Punchok Dorjey, Dy. Director Upshi Farm Dr. Tundup Namgial, Account Officer DC Office, Leh Jigmet Namgial, Fashion Designer NIFT/ Trainer Stanzin Palmo and women artisan from Phyang and Chushot Yokma.

It is to mention that about 32 women from Phyang and Chushot Yokma villages were given three moth training starting from 1st Nov. 2016 at Pashmina Deharing Plant, Leh by Fashion Designer NIFT, Stanzin Palmo and at present under the brand “Looms of Ladakh” these skilled group of women are producing knit and woven products by using the local raw materials like Pashmina and Sheep & Yak wool.

Dy. Director Upshi Farm Dr. Tundup Namgial informed the function that “Looms of Ladakh” has already made a business of Rs. 65 thousand in off season at Ice Hockey Rink Karzoo during winter games and at present Rs. 3.50 lacs product of stock in laying with the group.

Interacting with the women artisans, DC Leh P. Ramaswamy highly applauded the hard work of women in producing quality handloom products displayed in the function and stressed on continuous improvements in the standard of the products. Encouraging the women artisan, he said that there is huge potential in handloom and handicraft sector in Ladakh as there is plenty of raw materials like pashmina and wool which can be transformed into unique local products.

Responding to the demands and problems of women SHG like providing of distributing channels and marketing facility for their products, DC Leh informed about the idea of forming a one cooperative marketing association of women self-help groups of Leh district and assured all possible assistance and help in coming months to all the SHGs at one platform.

Speaking on the occasion, Councilor Phyang Punchok Dorjey appreciated the tireless work of Sheep Husbandry Dept. Leh and Fashion Designer NIFT, Stanzin Palmo in making the three-month training very successful and assured all possible help in taking this initiative to next level .

Speaking on the occasion, Account Officer DC Office, Leh Jigmet Namgial also encouraged the women for producing quality products and asked them to be ready with new products for coming tourist season. Later, Councilor Punchok Dorjey awarded the certificate of appreciation among trainee women.
