Puducherry : An increase in unemployment in the Union Territory was evident at the job fair as thousands thronged Tagore Arts College on Sunday in the hope of getting employment. More than 4,000 candidates registered at the job fair. While only 498 people were shortlisted, 150 were given job offer letters. “Those shortlisted would be called again for interview,” said Commissioner for Labour E.Vallavan.
Minister for Labour M.Kandasamy blamed the Central government for not providing adequate funds for the development of Puducherry despite the Puducherry Chief Minister’s attempts seeking funds from the Central government.
Puducherry Skill Development Society and Model Career Centre, Labour Department, in association with Tagore Arts College, organized this fair.
In Puducherry, medical and engineering students are in large numbers and there is a shortage of plumbers, welders, and other skilled workers. “We are focusing on the skill development and have opened training centres in the villages to equip and train the educated people for employment in industries. As per the election promise, at least one person in a family would be given,” he said.
He added that there is a shortage of funds in Puducherry. “The Chief Minister has approached the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Finance Minister. However, till now we have not received any money from them. In the hope they would provide funds, we continue to approach the Central government,” said the minister.
