New Delhi : Students applying to Delhi University can opt for short-term courses simultaneously to learn new skills and strengthen their resume. These courses are available at many colleges after regular classes get over. Their duration varies from 2-3 weeks to six months. Most of these short-term courses are designed to suit industry needs.
There is no restriction on the number of short-term courses a student can opt for while pursuing their graduation. The Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board in alliance with the National Skill Development Corporation is also imparting skill training to students at its main centre on North Campus.
Anju Gupta, officiating director, NCWEB, said: “With six new vocational courses, DU is taking the much-needed step to help students find employment early by enhancing their skills,” added Gupta.
Jesus and Mary College, too, offers a variety of short-term courses, including corporate communications & PR and financial management — two courses that have been around for over 10 years. “Short-term courses aim at developing the skills of students in their areas of interest, thus making them more employable,” said Sunita Narain, course coordinator, JMC.
Courses like big data analytics, started by JMC from this year, will introduce students to fundamentals of artificial intelligence, statistical analysis, data engineering and data-driven programming styles. They will also be provided hands-on training through live projects.
Deshbandhu College, on the other hand, offers short-term courses in software programming as well as paralegal training. Most DU colleges offer foreign language courses, which could assist students while applying abroad for higher studies, or those who wish to become translators, interpreters or even tourist guides.
The Institute of Home Economics offers a variety of courses, which are attended by both students studying in IHE as well as other DU colleges.
“The duration of these courses is around 50 hours, spread over 2-3 weeks. Recently, we completed a course on computer aided design in fabric and apparel sciences. Such courses aim to equip students with industry oriented skills,” said Ranjana Mahna, officiating director, IHE.
