Polytechnic intake goes down, Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) count intact

Nagpur: Following the large number of vacancies last year, the number of intake and polytechnic colleges has gone down. In 2016, the Nagpur region had a total intake capacity of 24,010, which has dropped to 22,065, while six colleges have shut because of poor response and facilities bringing the count from 70 to 64 this year.

The Nagpur region comprises of six districts of Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. There are around 26 polytechnics in Nagpur having around 8,895 seats.

As per data provided by joint director, technical education regional office, only 8793 students eventually took admission while 15,217 remained vacant in 2016.On the other hand, the data for Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), another career option for SSC students, show its popularity is intact with hardly any decline in number of institutes as well as intake.

According to directorate of Vocational Education and Training, there are around 55 ITIs in Nagpur district. Last year, 4,072 students were admitted to these ITIs. Of the 55, 30 ITIs are located in Nagpur and surrounding areas like Koradi, Kalmeshwar, Kamptee, Kuhi, Khapri and Butibori.
