Industry body CII organized conference on “Developing the Skill Ecosystem: The Way Forward”

Jamshedpur : One of the India’s leading industry association, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organized a Conference on “Developing the Skill Ecosystem: The Way Forward” on Tuesday 11th July 2017 at Jamshedpur.

Addressing the gathering, Neeraj Kant, Chairman CII Jamshedpur Zonal Council said that the ‘Make in India’ initiative among other strategic government initiatives, have gone a long way towards bringing focus on the manufacturing sector which is core to economic growth and job creation. However, world class manufacturing and gaining sustainable competitive advantage requires high degree of skills. And if not adequately focussed on manufacturing will soon become a commodity – relying purely on basic skills.

Amitava Baksi , convener skill development panel CII Jharkhand , mentioned that our country’s future is tied directly to the skills of our employment pool. As a million people join the workforce each month, their livelihoods, aspirations and quality of life is directly correlated with the skills they acquire at an early stage in their journey.

Sunil Bhaskaran , chairman CII Jharkhand State Council highlighted that it is extremely important for the economy and for the society to gainfully employ the youth of the country to create a social balance. He also mentioned that to enable employment ready workforce in the future, the youth need to be equipped with necessary skills and education. The country presently faces a dual challenge of severe paucity of highly-trained, quality labour, as well as non-employability of large sections of the educated workforce that possess little or no job skills.

Atul Bhatnagar Advisor, Start-ups in Skill Development, Renewable Energy & Fintech, mentioned that Jamshedpur has all the elements of making the place the Skill Capital of the country. He further added that skill is an important aspect of the progressive ideology and that Young India has lost its focus on skill development largely because, industry to begin with and society at large, have glamorised managerial roles over technical roles, making the pursuit of vocational skills less inspiring. Adarsh Agarwal, Managing Director, JAMIPOL Limited gave the concluding remarks for the session.

It may be noted that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 7.6% in 2015-16 and projected to have a higher growth rate in the coming year. Since availability of skilled manpower is imperative for an economy to attain higher economic growth, to overcome challenges in the existing skill ecosystem, Government of India has put in place National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, 2015.

The state is also formulating sector and trade specific strategies for skill trainings in order to maximize employment opportunities on a sustainable basis in the state. Aligning with the government policies and initiatives, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is working to generate productive and gainful employment for the youth of India. Further, CII being an apex industry association, has been closely working with the state government and industry to take ownership in skill training process to elevate India’s skill development landscape and bring it at par with international standards.
