Once again, Transport Academy skill development centre to face delay in inauguration

Hyderabad: The Skill Development Centre (SDC) at Telangana State Road Transportation Corporation (TSRTC) Transport Academy which was scheduled to start from August 15 is yet to take off.

According to RTC officials, with a view to develop the skills of unemployed youth and to polish their existing driving and other motor mechanic skills and to shape them up for becoming self-sustainable, the Central government had proposed to establish Skill Development Centre (SDC) throughout the country. The TSRTC had applied for getting the status of SDC and the Centre selected the existing training institutes at Transport Academy (Hakimpet), Zonal Staff Training College/HPT and Warangal.

With the SDC status, the corporation can train the employees on driving testing tracks and also impart training in vehicle mechanics. The official said the government of India would be giving funds to run the institution and also authorize the institutions to issue certificates.

The official said the Centre had asked the corporation to initiate training of the heavy motor driving for the needy people. The officials said the Corporation had enough infrastructures in the academy to train the drivers and others and it has been doing that for years and the track record of the drivers shows that.

According to the official, the RTC has the accident rate of 0.07 per cent, which is the lowest in the country and there has been a decrease in the number of accidents during the last two years. The RTC has a head count of 50,000 and 20,870 drivers and 25 per cent of the drivers were not involved in any accidents, the official added.

The official said SDCs were to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video conference on July 15 and again on August 15 but was postponed. The corporation is yet to receive any communication from the Centre about the inauguration.

Academy principal Kiran Reddy said the academy had procured two cars for LMV driving test and two buses for the heavy motor vehicle test. He said they are awaiting the nod from the Centre for starting the SDC.
