“Economic progress not possible without skill development”

Madurai : Economic progress of a country was not possible without knowledge and skill development of its people, said Ramachandra N. Galla, chairman of Amara Raja Group of Companies, while delivering the graduation ceremony address at Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE).

Mr. Galla said that a study of any developed country or civilization in the history would reveal that development was based on advancement in knowledge. Pointing out that India had one of the youngest workforce in the world, Mr. Galla stressed the need for a large number of educational institutions for disseminating knowledge to younger generation. “Every child is intelligent. The need is to provide the right opportunity and environment for learning to all the children,” he said. He also heaped praises on the TCE for giving importance to quality and ethics at a time when “many of the educational institutions are run purely on a commercial basis”.

Delivering the presidential address, chairman and correspondent of the TCE Karumuttu T. Kannan urged the students to do self-examination to identify the factors that could help in differentiating themselves from others. “The world is more competitive than it was 2-3 years back. The companies that recruit you are going to demand greater skills and responsibilities,” Mr. Kannan told the graduating students.

Mr. Kannan also stressed the importance of continuous pursuit of knowledge which was inevitable for achieving growth in their career. Earlier, V. Abhaikumar, Principal, welcomed the dignitaries. Officials from the college said that 1,141 students who had graduated from various streams of under-graduation and post-graduation courses were awarded degrees during the function.
