SUMMARY:ILO's Skills Bridge Master Class - Episode 12
DESCRIPTION:International Labour Organization (ILO) to organize Episode 12 of Masterclass Series “The Skills Bridge” on the theme \nFuture-ready skills policy: Low-income and Middle-income countries pathways to growth\, social justice and employment\nThis high-level roundtable aims to convene leading international experts\, policymakers\, and stakeholders to share experiences\, insights\, and lessons learned in overcoming both perennial and emerging challenges in skills development systems. \nBackground: \nIn today’s rapidly evolving global economy\, the nature of work is undergoing profound transformation\, driven by technological innovation\, climate change\, shifting trade dynamics\, and demographic transitions. As industries adapt\, so must the workforce. Yet\, a widening skills gap threatens economic growth\, employability\, and innovation across the globe.  \nWhile all countries face challenges in aligning education and training systems with changing labour market needs\, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are disproportionately affected. These countries grapple not only with emerging demands—such as digital and green skills—but also with long-standing systemic issues: underfunded education systems\, weak industry linkages\, outdated curricula and infrastructure\, and shortages of qualified trainers.  \nThe statistics are stark:  \n\nYouth unemployment globally stands at 16%\, with nearly one in four young people not in education\, employment\, or training (NEET).\nPublic investment in TVET averages less than 0.2% of GDP\, resulting in outdated facilities and limited capacity.\nFormal TVET access in many LMICs is below 25%\, compared to 68% in OECD countries.\nRapid growth of workforce in LMICs\, especially Africa (85% of global workforce increase by 2035).\nLow enrolment in TVET (e.g. ~6% of secondary students in Africa; rural & female youth are underserved). \n\nSpeakers:\n\n\nOliver Diehl\, Deputy Head of Division in Vocational Education and Training at the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research\n\n\nSimon McGrath\, Professor of Education at the University of Glasgow\n\n\nGlenda Quintini\, Head of Skills and Future Readiness Division\, OECD\n\n\nPawan Bhageria\, President HR\, IT and Admin and Education at Tata technologies\n\n\nManuela Prina\, Principal education specialist at Asian Development Bank\n\n\nNicholas Ouma\, Senior youth advisor at African Union Commission\n\n\nAshwin K. Arunachalam\, Senior Consultant in digital infrastructure\, Turner & Townsend\n\n\nNtshangase Nokuthula\, Youth Representative\, South Africa\n\n\nAshwani Aggarwal\, Head of Skills Policy and Governance\, ILO\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\nPolicy makers and government officials\,\nEmployers and workers organisation\,\nSkills and research institutions\,\nPrivate sector leaders and experts\,\nEducation and training providers\, academia\,\nDevelopment partners and banks\,\nInvestors & innovators\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Webinar on "Skill Development: Emergence of Industry 4.0"
DESCRIPTION:Background\nWith one of the youngest populations in the world\, India has most of its population in the working age group\, with the trends showing that by 2022 63% of the population will be in the working age group. This immense potential is a tool that India could use in gaining economic strides globally. At the same instance\, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is throwing variables into this equation\, by disrupting the job markets globally\, as businesses are adopting newer and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence\, Cloud Computing\, Internet of Things etc. \nEven in the present scenario\, the argument that there might just not be enough supply of jobs to meet the immense inflow of candidates is certainly untrue as there is much evidence against it\, such as 40% of the employers’ face trouble in filling positions for skilled roles. This shows the immense gap in the skills needed to fill the available jobs and the lack of it in the incoming workforce. With the immense workforce at its disposal\, this skill gap is what needs to be bridged to take advantage of the situation in which India currently finds itself. \nTechnological advancements have created an impactful spur in changing the global job market. The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that by 2022\, almost half the companies across the globe will be adopting automation in some form or the other to reduce workforce on the same tasks. As the machines take over the more routine and pattern-based jobs\, there is a higher demand for more ‘human’ skills\, and skills related to the Industry 4.0 technologies. As per WEF 2018 report\, the four specific technological advances—ubiquitous high-speed mobile internet; artificial intelligence; widespread adoption of big data analytics; and cloud technology—are set to dominate the 2018–2022 period as drivers positively affecting business growth. With platforms like SkillsBuild\, which is offered by IBM\, job seekers\, business owners\, entrepreneurs and any individual with learning aspirations can now tap into host of industry relevant content\, including Artificial intelligence\, Cloud\, Data analytics and security to re-skill and up-skill themselves\, at no cost. \nKey Highlights\n\nIndustry 4.0 – An overview\nIssues\, Challenges & Opportunities of Industry 4.0 in Skill Development\nRole of 4.0 Technologies for Up-Skilling\, Re-Skilling and Skill Development Training program\nRole and Responsibility of Government and Industry in promoting Industry 4.0 Technologies for Skill Development Training program\nEmergence of 4.0 Technologies in Skill Development & the way forward\n\nSpeakers\nDr. R S Bawa\, Pro Chancellor\, Chandigarh UniversityMr. Murugan Vasudevan\, Head\, Social Innovation\, CISCO India & South AsiaDr. M Jayaprakasan\, Joint Director\, DGT\, MSDEMr. Venkatesh Sarvasiddhi\, Senior Head\, Digital Skills and Innovation\, NSDCMr. Manoj Balachandran\, Head CSR\, IBM IndiaDr. Devraj Singh\, Vice president\, ESSCIMr. Narayanan Ramaswamy\, National Leader\, Education and Skill Development\, KPMG IndiaMr. Maninder Singh Nayyar\, Co-Chairman\, ASSOCHAMDr. Sandhya Chintala\, Executive Director\, IT-ITeS SSC\, NASSCOM \nKey Outcomes\n\nA perspective of what could be the way forward with the emergence of Industry 4.0 technologies in Skill Development while keeping in mind the future generation of our country.\nAs an output from the webinar\, we can compile\, summarize and submit the set of recommendations to the concerned Ministries on the basis of the discussions and inputs received during the webinar.\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW

It is now possible to set up power centres in rural India\, with the help of digital equipment and teach via video calls. \ne-learning and Online assessment technologies can help Skill Training Institutes to automate key aspects of teaching\, knowledge sharing and conduct online assessment. Many skill training institutes have started taking advantage of technology to enhance\, automate and scale up their operations. \nMany organizations often\, when shifting to virtual learning\, tend to reuse existing materials and formats rather than designing these from scratch. It needs to be considered that the challenges and opportunities of the virtual world are likely to be much different than those stemming from physical interactions. Technology has been an enabler and a key one at that\, but the differentiators are the skills that have emerged through this crisis situation: Resilience\, Compassion and Agility. \nBe it selling skills\, networking/ influencing skills\, all as were happening in a face to face medium will change to virtual which means a different way to approach customers\, gain their trust and sell the products. There are several examples where face to face distribution models were the only way and yet COVID has indeed accelerated the move to digital and online mediums. Learning will need to evolve to cater to a larger digital world which has more players to compete with and more markets to explore. \nEmerging technologies are gaining space in our existing skilling infrastructure at an impressive pace. Even in India\, several such technologies are already in their pilot stages; Virtual Reality is being used to train candidates on the usage of heavy machinery. \nOther examples include the use of VR to train aspiring pilots in the aviation industry. Earlier pilots were trained on lighter aircraft and then shifted to heavier airplanes. As the aviation industry is highly critical\, they were the first ones to efficiently adopt AR-VR in their skilling process. Given the costs incurred in establishing such training set-ups\, other industries are not so open about this idea presently. \nThat’s where we should expect the Government to intervene and create establishments where learning of the smallest of soft and hard skills takes place on the basis of futuristic learning technology. With the Government’s emphasis on Skill India Mission\, we can expect these plans to gain more traction. If an establishment of such a tech-based learning ecosystem is realized\, with its full potential\, we’ll have no dearth of high quality\, an aptly-trained workforce that will be able to drive India’s economy towards the right direction. Therefore\, it is safe to conclude that emerging technology and its implementation in India’s skilling ecosystem will be phenomenally beneficial for the country’s workforce as well as its industry. It has the ability to make India the international powerhouse of a competent human resource. \nClick Here to Register
