DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\nThe Foreign\, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) (erstwhile DFID) in collaboration with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) are delighted to invite you for the launch of 8 disability sensitization e-modules under the FCDO’s ‘Skills for Jobs Programme.’ These modules will be made available to 11000 empaneled training partners of NSDC and 8 Lakh youth who have enrolled on the NSDC portal so far. \nThese e-modules have been developed by UK’s national Star Foundation- a college having 50 years of experience in the disability space. The series of short online learning modules are designed to support practitioners who are working with people with disabilities in order to improve their practice and enhance their learning experience. The modules are for those in management\, teaching\, training\, support roles\, employers\, health care professionals\, and organizational leaders who work with people with disabilities. \nA formal launch event of these courses is planned for 22nd April 2021. People with disabilities continue to be marginalized due to lack of many supportive environmental factors\, unequal employment opportunities\, lack of supportive policies\, etc. \nILO says unemployment among the persons with disabilities is as high as 80 percent in some countries.1 This leads to 5-7% of loss in GDP. Often employers assume that persons with disabilities are unable to work. This low level of inclusion is largely driven by myths around efforts and investment needed for effectively employing them and potential loss of productivity. On the contrary\, research suggests that PwDs are as good\, if not more motivated and engaged as regular employees. \nEach year\, Youth4Jobs conducts research in different sector as a part of knowledge series to explore best practices on employment of people with disabilities. At the same instance\, the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is throwing variables into this equation\, by disrupting the job markets globally\, as businesses are adopting newer and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence\, Cloud Computing\, Internet of Things etc. \nEven in the present scenario\, the argument that there might just not be enough supply of jobs to meet the immense inflow of candidates is certainly untrue as there is much evidence against it\, such as 40% of the employers’ face trouble in filling positions for skilled roles. This shows the immense gap in the skills needed to fill the available jobs and the lack of it in the incoming workforce. With the immense workforce at its disposal\, this skill gap is what needs to be bridged to take advantage of the situation in which India currently finds itself. \nTechnological advancements have created an impactful spur in changing the global job market. The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates that by 2022\, almost half the companies across the globe will be adopting automation in some form or the other to reduce workforce on the same tasks. As the machines take over the more routine and pattern-based jobs\, there is a higher demand for more ‘human’ skills\, and skills related to the Industry 4.0 technologies. As per WEF 2018 report\, the four specific technological advances—ubiquitous high-speed mobile internet; artificial intelligence; widespread adoption of big data analytics; and cloud technology—are set to dominate the 2018–2022 period as drivers positively affecting business growth. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nAccording to 2019 Employability Skills Report by British Council\, India is a fast growing economy\, which would require a large pool of workers with close to 63% working age population in the skilling pool by 2022. According to another report1\, the labor force is projected to grow by close to 2 per cent and would roughly add over 7 million per year for the next few years.  With an increased migration of the workers from the rural to the urban sectors of the economy\, India realizes that it has the need for a well thought out and executed strategy to provide a new set of skills through vocational training in order to effectively absorb this additional workforce and sustain economic growth. \nThis drives our attention to the need of the hour which is to build a robust infrastructure of trainers and training institutes for the same. It is now possible to set up power centres in rural India\, with the help of digital equipment and teach via video calls. \ne-learning and Online assessment technologies can help Skill Training Institutes to automate key aspects of teaching\, knowledge sharing and conduct online assessment. Many skill training institutes have started taking advantage of technology to enhance\, automate and scale up their operations. \nMany organizations often\, when shifting to virtual learning\, tend to reuse existing materials and formats rather than designing these from scratch. It needs to be considered that the challenges and opportunities of the virtual world are likely to be much different than those stemming from physical interactions. Technology has been an enabler and a key one at that\, but the differentiators are the skills that have emerged through this crisis situation: Resilience\, Compassion and Agility. \nBe it selling skills\, networking/ influencing skills\, all as were happening in a face to face medium will change to virtual which means a different way to approach customers\, gain their trust and sell the products. There are several examples where face to face distribution models were the only way and yet COVID has indeed accelerated the move to digital and online mediums. Learning will need to evolve to cater to a larger digital world which has more players to compete with and more markets to explore. \nEmerging technologies are gaining space in our existing skilling infrastructure at an impressive pace. Even in India\, several such technologies are already in their pilot stages; Virtual Reality is being used to train candidates on the usage of heavy machinery. \nOther examples include the use of VR to train aspiring pilots in the aviation industry. Earlier pilots were trained on lighter aircraft and then shifted to heavier airplanes. As the aviation industry is highly critical\, they were the first ones to efficiently adopt AR-VR in their skilling process. Given the costs incurred in establishing such training set-ups\, other industries are not so open about this idea presently. \nThat’s where we should expect the Government to intervene and create establishments where learning of the smallest of soft and hard skills takes place on the basis of futuristic learning technology. With the Government’s emphasis on Skill India Mission\, we can expect these plans to gain more traction. If an establishment of such a tech-based learning ecosystem is realized\, with its full potential\, we’ll have no dearth of high quality\, an aptly-trained workforce that will be able to drive India’s economy towards the right direction. Therefore\, it is safe to conclude that emerging technology and its implementation in India’s skilling ecosystem will be phenomenally beneficial for the country’s workforce as well as its industry.
