University Grants Commission (UGC) asked education institutions to review & revise curriculum to make it “skill-based”

New Delhi : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked education institutions to review and revise their curriculum on a “priority” basis by making it more skill-based.

The education authority has also asked institutions to adopt it as a practice to review the curriculum once in three years.

The decision has been taken after a Group of Secretaries on Education and Social Development met the Prime Minister recently, and it was suggested that academic departments in universities should be reviewed and revised at least once in every three years.

“The review and revision of academic curricula should focus on the existing and potential demand and supply of skill sets to make the University/College students employable. You are, therefore, requested to accord top priority to the matter and take immediate action so that the curricula of various programs offered at your university are revised and adopted for quick implementation by your University and the colleges affiliated to it,” a circular sent to all universities and colleges by UGC read.

“The needs of society and culture can be best addressed when the programmes offered by the university are accompanied by a mechanism to revise the curricula at regular intervals,” said Secretary UGC Jaspal Sandhu.

The order is in accord with central governments plans of paying more attention to skill development in the country. Minister of Human Resource Development (HRD) Prakash Javadekar has also time and again emphasized on the importance of skill training for youth. There are plans to make skill development a part of the curriculum for students at school level also. The Ministry of Skill Development is in talks with the Ministry of HRD to implement the plan.
