Job skill deficit of 39 percent in Kerala could be resolved through skill development programmes, a study revealed
A study to estimate the skills needed to be employable, carried out by ICT Academy of Kerala, shows 39% of the job skill deficit among students from professional colleges in the state.
The study was carried out in the member institutions of ICTAK between 6th semester engineering students and randomly-chosen new employees from IT companies. The average marks of a few colleges varied widely. However, 30 per cent of the colleges are much ahead in ensuring job opportunities. The present situation can be improved if such colleges are offered training facilities, the study pointed out.
The study was done after leaving out the colleges that have good placement track record. ICT Academy CEO Santhosh Kurup pointed out that despite leaving out these colleges; the study came out with good results. The reason of improvement in employability skills in these institutions could be the skill development programmes. The study said, if more academic institutions/colleges come forward to be part of such programmes then problem of lack of job related skills can be resolved.
