The Skills for Jobs (SFJ) programme under the auspices of the Department of International Development (DFID), Govt of United Kingdom in partnership with Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Govt. of India aims to create sustainable and inclusive skill development training across all vulnerable and marginalised sections of India.
In an effort to integrate the special learning needs of the Persons with Disability, DFID has joined hands with Directorate of Employment & Training (DET), Govt. of Gujarat to develop ITI Rajkot as a Centre of Excellence which imparts demand driven skills training programmes for the PwD. It is envisaged the ITI would be a vanguard in making skill development more accessible.
As a part of the Technical Assistance Programme, DFID would be supporting the accessibility audit of the infrastructure, training of trainers, development of inclusive course and curricula together with facilitating connect with the local employers.
With close to 1.81 percent of the population in Gujarat being recognized as disabled and barely 30% of the same being in the working population, there is an urgent need to enhance the employability of the disabled youth. The ITIs have been in the fore front of driving the skill agenda and continue to increase its relevance among the disadvantaged youth in the country. This partnership of the stakeholders is a step towards forwarding the mandate for skill development.
As a part of the engagement, ITI Rajkot would be made fully accessible to youth with any listed disability. The emphasis will be on local trainee base and leveraging on the connect with the employers and industries around the area “We have passion for vocational education. We need to develop similar passion for inclusion of PwD in the vocational education and their employability.
The Centre of Excellence in Rajkot is being developed to provide best-in-class training facilities to train PWDs and connect them with industry. The final goal being to replicate best practices across all ITIs so that all ITIs are inclusive for Persons with Disabilities” said Mr Supreet Singh Gulati, Director, Employment and Training, Government of Gujarat.
As a beginning to the intervention, a workshop for orientation and sensitization of the stakeholders working in the disability space was organized yesterday. The workshop was curated by National Star College- an award-winning UK agency specialized design, research, and delivery of innovative solutions to support PwDs in independent living and earning.
The session covered the importance and usage of assistive technologies, UK best practices and awareness building activities for various trainers and principals of ITIs. V-Shesh, an NGO working across India in the disability space has been selected as the local partner for the facilitation of the programme.
