FCDO India organized Knowledge Sharing Session on Greening of Jobs

New Delhi, October 7, 2020. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), formerly known as Department for International Development (DFID), Government of UK organized a virtual knowledge sharing session on Greening of Jobs. Speakers from University of Sussex and The Association of Colleges, UK gave insights about green economy and greening of jobs along with an overview of initiatives and practices adopted by the UK to encourage climate resilient skill development practices.

The event saw participation from over 90 participants which included senior officials from FCDO, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Sector Skill Councils, Training Providers and Industry Associations from Renewable energy sector.

Ms. Anna French, Deputy Development Officer, FCDO emphasized the need to find global solutions with an energy mix and move towards greener economy in the opening remarks. Mr. Manish Kumar, CEO, NSDC highlighted that session will help in gaining insights on greening of jobs & ecosystems followed in the UK and how it will help in reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities in India.

Prof. Jeremy Hall, Director of Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex, through his presentation, highlighted key themes in green skills along with greening of jobs in the UK. He gave an overview of key high- level issues followed by insights on current trends and future green skills needs along with relating policy to practice in greening from industry’s and employer’s perspective. Mr. David Corke from The Association of Colleges (AoC) spoke about the UK TVET green framework and approach highlighting key policy priorities. He also highlighted the lessons learnt from UK’s green skills approach and models along with insights on approaches to delivering and assessing green skills.

Deepti Saxena, Head- Standards, NSDC, highlighted that the Green Jobs Sector Skill Council was created to move towards greening by developing standards and qualification packs for green jobs and conceptualization and development of the green framework. Some useful discussions took place on how greening of jobs can be embedded in India along with adopting some of the learnings from the UK. The session ended with a vote of thanks.
