Launch Event of Study on “THE INCLUSION JOURNEY : Integrating Persons with Disabilities in the Hospitality and Quick Service Restaurant Sector in India”

December 2, 2020 @ 16:00 17:00

According to WHO, every 10-15 out of 100 live with some form of disability around the world and every 2-4 are severely disabled. People with disabilities continue to be marginalized due to lack of many supportive environmental factors, unequal employment opportunities, lack of supportive policies, etc.

ILO says unemployment among the persons with disabilities is as high as 80 percent in some countries.1 This leads to 5-7% of loss in GDP. Often employers assume that persons with disabilities are unable to work. This low level of inclusion is largely driven by myths around efforts and investment needed for effectively employing them and potential loss of productivity. On the contrary, research suggests that PwDs are as good, if not more motivated and engaged as regular employees.

Each year, Youth4Jobs conducts research in different sector as a part of knowledge series to explore best practices on employment of people with disabilities. The recent study being conducted in Hospitality and QSR sector in India.

Hospitality and QSR sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in India and has lead by example when it comes to innovation and change. Hospitality being one of the early sectors that employed people with disabilities, the study captures live case studies and shows the reader how to enable inclusion of PwDs in the hospitality sector. This report is not intended to provide comprehensive solutions for all disability employment issues but attempts to encourage companies to take initial steps in becoming inclusive and disabled friendly.
