IAS Debashree Mukherjee Assumes Charge As Secretary at Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

New Delhi: On Friday, in a major bureaucratic-level re-shuffle, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Smt. Debashree Mukherjee, IAS (1991 batch, AGMUT cadre), as the Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The move, also includes appointments of several Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) set to assume charge after the retirement of incumbents, is aimed at infusing fresh leadership into critical sectors of governance.

Smt. Debashree Mukherjee is a 1991 batch IAS Officer of AGMUT Cadre, brings with her over three decades of experience in governance, policy-making, and institutional leadership. She has served in several key positions in the Government of India and the Government of Delhi, contributing significantly to sectors of national importance.

Most recently, Smt. Mukherjee held the position of Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti. In this role, she played a crucial part in advancing India’s water management strategies and river rejuvenation efforts. Her career also includes notable tenures as Joint Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, CMD of Delhi Transport Corporation, and CEO of Delhi Jal Board.

Her tenure has been marked by a consistent focus on governance reforms, infrastructure development and institution building. In recent years, her leadership in the water sector has drawn attention for balancing development priorities with sustainability and resource management.

Academically accomplished, Smt. Mukherjee holds an MSc in Water and Environmental Management from Loughborough University and an MA in Linguistics and English from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Her academic and professional background reflects a unique blend of expertise in environmental governance, urban management, and public policy.

As she takes charge of MSDE, Smt. Mukherjee’s vision and leadership expected to provide a strong impetus to the Skill India Mission, aimed at equipping India’s youth with future-ready skills. Her appointment comes at a crucial time when the nation is focusing on building a skilled workforce to realize the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
