Center decided to remove Polytechnics from HRD Ministry to the Ministry of Skill Development

New Delhi : With the focus of making the education sector more inline with the industrial requirements, the Centre has decided to remove polytechnics from HRD Ministry to the Ministry of Skill Development. There are almost 23,000 polytechnics exists in the country.

The decision was informed in the meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education held in Delhi.

ITIs had been already shifted to the Skill Development Ministry. The present move is a follow up on this. There exist allegations that the students coming from polytechnics lack the training required for the industries.

This shift initiates modifications in curriculum of the courses. The syllabus required for each trade will be formed by the corresponding sectoral councils. The syllabus would be prepared accordingly.

Kerala’s Education Minister C Raveendran and Higher Education Secretary Dr Usha Titus took part in the meet.

Dr Usha said, “The decision has been made. But the Centre has not informed about further proceedings and actions. Until then the present situation will exist in case of the polytechnic colleges”.
