Now aided schools in Goa to get skill-based vocational subjects

Panaji : After the national skills qualifications framework (NSQF) helped 202 government high school students clear the Class X exam, the state is planning to extend the scheme to aided schools as well, sources said.

In 2017, the second batch of students cleared Class X since the introduction of the NSQF scheme in government high schools.

The scheme has become very popular among students with nearly 1,800 government school students who opted for NSQF appearing for Class X board exams in 2017.

NSQF allows students to opt for a seventh subject that involves skills training in 14 streams like tourism, hospitality etc. Of the six regular subjects and the seventh NSQF one, students have to clear any six to clear their Class X exam.

The scheme helps students who prefer a vocation-based approach to studies clear their examinations by letting them study a vocational subject, it gives them vertical mobility.

Students who clear Class X under the scheme can continue training in the subject of their choice at the higher secondary level as well and study upto the degree level in the vocational stream.

Under NSQF at the school level, students attend lectures by industry professionals and have to go on at least four industrial visits a year in their chosen specialization. They are evaluated by industry experts in the practical portion of the course, which includes viva and creating a work portfolio.

From 2017 onward, assessments are being done by industry persons through National Skill Development Corporation, based on an MoU signed between the national body and the state.
