Bengaluru : Taking a que from the centre, and a series of other BJP ruled states, the Congress government recently created the Skills Development Department in Karnataka.
Primarily meant to upgrade the skill sets of the working population in the state, the skills development department will consolidate all employment and livlihood missions from various other departments.
Be it the rural livilihood mission or the urban livlihood mission of the centre which is handled by the RDPR and UDD respectively or the employment generation programme under the social welfare department, all these programmes and missions will be now handled by the skills development department.
As a stepping stone, the government on Thursday appointed senior bureaucrat Sanjiv Kumar as the department’s first Additional Chief Secretary. He is given the concurrent charge of labour department as the new department will be inter-dependent on the labour department.
Sources in the government said Kumar has been given the specific task to set up the new department and begin its functioning at the earliest to pick up pace on the skill development programmes as opposed to other states in the country. It is said the nitty-grittys of setting up the department, including its accommodation and staff are yet to be finalized.
Meanwhile, the government on Thursday transferred 22 IAS officers. Revenue department principal secretary B Basavaraju has been transferred as the new Transport department principal secretary. E V Ramana Reddy has been posted as the new revenue department principal secretary.
