Skill Development of Women inmates in Jails making them employable to fetch 16,000 salary

Jaipur : Women inmates of the Central Jail here are turning into artisans, thanks to the support provided by the Rajasthan government’s Department of Skills, Employment and Entrepreneurship (SEE) to the skill development programmes run by livelihood institutions.

Some of the women have been able to secure quality placements after being released from prison.

The scheme is part of the skill training programme run by the SEE Department to cover the “untouched segments” of society, State SEE Commissioner Krishna Kunal said on Tuesday. Similar training is being provided to the jail’s male inmates as well, he added.

Teachers from the Jaipur-based Quantum Career Academy are training the women in jewellery making, paper-mach and other trades related to arts and crafts. Some women are receiving training to become beauticians and fashion designers.

“A woman inmate secure a job after her release recently and is earning Rs. 16,000 per month,” said Shipra Bhutani, the academy’s chief executive officer.

Nursery management

Male inmates are provided training in nursery management, vermi-compost, agriculture and traditional crafts. The programme has benefited over 400 inmates, of whom 85% have been released from the prison so far.

Mr. Kunal said that the training is specifically targeted towards inmates who have six months or less to serve in jail.

“The inmates are also provided counseling to help them face society with confidence and lead a good life,” he added.

The Department has partnered with Prayas Juvenile Aid Society, Sarthak Educational Trust, Dhara Foundation and Vidya Kiran Education Society for conducting a series of such programmes.
