New Delhi : The India and United Kingdom (UK) Government signed a MoU to strengthen greater collaboration on skill development, vocational education and training. To oversee the progress under the MoU, a Joint Steering Committee (JSC) was constituted with representation from Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Directorate General of Training (DGT), Niti Aayog, Department for International Development (DFID-UK Government) and British Council Division.
The first meeting of the JSC was held at New Delhi on June 17, 2019 under the Chairmanship of Ms. Juthika Patankar, Additional Secretary, MSDE and Mr. Gavin McGillivray, Head of DFID India, Government of UK.
The apprenticeship programmes, capacity building of the stakeholders, training of trainers, decentralized planning, demand driven training programs, cluster-based approach towards convergence between short term and long-term skill training programs and making skilling aspirational were the prime focus areas highlighted by the Ministry. The DFID, British Council and UKEIRI have been supporting Indian skill ecosystem by bringing in UK best practices in the areas of curriculum development, training of trainers and assessors, soft skills, transnational standards, inclusion of women and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), across different sectors and regions. The JSC meeting is an endeavor to establish convergence and plan for new initiatives in line with skilling priorities of Government of India.
The areas of interventions discussed in the JSC included
(i) strengthening apprenticeship ecosystem in India,
(ii) sharing of lessons for integration of vocational and school education,
(iii) capacity building of the trainers,
(iv) inclusion of PwDs in the skill training using innovative models,
(v) use of technology in imparting skills and
(vi) leadership and management training for the capacity building of the government officials in the delivery of skill training.
