The Principal Secretary for State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) of Kenya, Dr. Esther Muoria, has presented the Department’s priorities, strategic direction and funding requirements before the Parliamentary Committee on Education, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening technical skills development nationwide.
Appearing before the Committee, Dr. Muoria outlined a proposed budget requirement of Ksh. 24.8 billion, including Ksh. 21.3 billion for recurrent expenditure and Ksh. 3.5 billion for development expenditure, to support the continued delivery and expansion of technical and vocational education and training across the country.
Dr. Muoria emphasized that sustained and adequate financing remains critical to enhancing the effectiveness of Kenya’s TVET ecosystem. The proposed funding aims to bolster scholarships and trainee support programmes, improve institutional capacity, modernise training infrastructure and equipment, and ensure efficient service delivery within TVET institutions.
The session also highlighted the growing importance of technical and vocational education (TVET) in preparing young people with industry-relevant skills needed for a competitive labour market.
The engagement provided a platform for discussions on the role of TVET in driving workforce competitiveness, encouraging innovation and supporting Kenya’s broader industrialization and socio-economic transformation agenda.
With skills development increasingly viewed as a key pillar of economic growth, the State Department reaffirmed the need for strong investment in vocational training to equip Kenya’s youth for emerging industry demands and future employment opportunities.
