10000 to be trained under DDU-GKY to fill skill gap in ports and maritime sector : K K Agarwal

Kolkata : As many as 10,000 persons will be trained annually for the next three years, funded by the Ministry of Shipping, to address the skill gap in ports and maritime sector in 21 coastal districts under the Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kayshalya Yojna (DDU GKY).

As of now, a total of 1,917 persons have been trained and 1,123 have been placed under coastal district skill development programmes, KK Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Sagarmala Project said here yesterday at a maritime and logistics workshop by Bengal Chamber.

A fire safety training project for workers at Alang-Sosiya shipyard at a cost of Rs 30 crore is also being funded by the ministry, he said. “Out of the Rs 30 crores, Rs 10 crores have already been released and 4,036 people have been trained”, the senior government official informed.

Further, he said that a Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS), which would be a first of its kind, is being set up at a total estimated project cost of Rs 765.2 crore.

“CEMS will equip students with employable engineering and technical skills in the areas of Ship Hull Design, Ship Detailed Design, Shipbuilding and Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and advanced digital manufacturing-factory concepts," Mr Agarwal said.

The CEMS will be able train 10,512 students and will have 24 laboratories, six in IRS Mumbai and 18 in Indian Maritime University campus in Vishakhapatnam, he informed.

“It is proposed to run on Hub & Spoke Model with majority funding from private sector,” Mr Agarwal said.

The Ministry of Shipping has sanctioned Rs 50.07 crore for CEMS, out of which Rs 25.03 crore has already been released, he said.

The Sagarmala Project which is being taken by the Centre envisions logistic cost savings of Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 per annum by 2025.

Coastal Community Development, with the main focus on skill development, coastal tourism project, development of fishing harbours and fish processing centres, is one of the major pillars of the Sagarmala project.
