India must move on from universal functional literacy to skill development and lifelong learning : Venkiah Naidu

While addressing in the gathering after conferring the Nehru and Tagore Literacy Awards instituted by the Indian Adult Education Association, Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India had talked about ‘Education In India’. The VP said, ‘Literacy Gives Dignity And Self-Confidence To Individuals.’

”Our country must move on from universal functional literacy to skill development and lifelong learning. The learning is a continual process and we need to develop an efficient programme involving all the stakeholders to achieve the goal of building a learning society,” he added further.

According to Naidu, there is a glaring gap in world development that one-third population of the world is illiterate, a report of PIB said.

“One-third population of the world is illiterate. The literacy rate of the country was 73 per cent, with male literacy at 80.9 per cent and female literacy at 64.6 per cent,” Naidu said.

Government, the private sector, and media should collaborate

Naidu, while addressing people also said that the government, the civil society, the private sector and the media should work together to create a literate, a knowledge and a learning society. Schools must get transformed into active and vibrant places of learning

The Vice president shared his unhappiness by looking at the reports that reflect the predominance of rote memorization, lack of learning materials and inadequate attention to different dimensions of learning.

“There is a need to rethink education and for schools to review what is taught and how it is taught. Schools and colleges must transform into centres of learning where students experience the joy of learning,” the VP said.

Along with it, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development Upendra Kushwaha has recently announced in the Lok Sabha that over seven per cent of classrooms in schools across the country require major repairs.
