Delhi Government to focus skill development of underprivileged students : Rajendra Pal Gautam

New Delhi : The Social Welfare department of the Delhi government will focus on skill development programmes for the underprivileged and physically handicapped students, minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said on Friday. The decision came after Gautam’s two-day visit of the city’s schools for underprivileged and hearing and speech impaired students.

Minister said, “These kids need more support from the government. Skill development programs will be very helpful for them. The education will help them to grow as responsible citizens, but skill development is important as it will help them to get a job. During his visits, Gautam found that there is not much focus on skill developments of the physically handicapped students.

“Only education is not enough. We have to understand their condition and needs,” he said.

The minister has directed officials of his department to find out all the schools for such children in the city and then to examine the prevailing condition in these institutions.

Gautam also found that there is a huge staff crunch in these schools, which needs to be changed. He directed officials to discuss the matter with the Education department. Adding to these problems, Gautam noted that the infrastructure of these schools is poor.

The minister had previously chaired various meetings with officials and also met representatives of the SC/ST community and underprivileged residents of Delhi. He had discussed the issues with them and taken note of various problems they are facing. “A lot of change in the infrastructure is needed. The students should feel at home at these schools.I think a revolutionary change in the social welfare sector is needed to deliver a good life to these people,”he added.
