Gandhinagar : Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn) organizes “Neev”, a community outreach programme. It has as expanded its activities from ‘entrepreneurship training’ to include ‘vocational skill development training’ for the grassroots. The program started its first vocational skill training course on Monday (May 23, 2016) at the institute’s Palaj Campus. The two-month-long course is supported by the Desai Foundation in USA.
The course will teach vocational trade skills such as carpentry, fitting, wiring, plumbing, tin-smithy, machines and welding. The course has 27 participants in the age-group of 18 to 28 years. While most of the participants are from Palaj and Basan, the villages neighboring IITGN, there are also participants from Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh.
Through the unique outreach initiative, the youth from the grassroots will receive training from the institute’s staff in IITGN’s Mechanical Engineering Lab and Electrical Engineering Lab. Apart from the vocational skill development, the participants will receive business skill training during the last week of the workshop. At the later part of the course, the participants will go for field visits to industries.
Neev Coordinator, Soumya Harish said, “The initiative aims to create more employment or entrepreneurial opportunities for the participants as well as encourage them to undertake further advanced training in the trades of their choice.”
Until now, Neev has been largely focusing on helping the growth of entrepreneurship through training, mentoring and networking opportunities.
