Program inaugurated for skill development in carpet weaving

Jammu: Under the esteemed guidance of Vikram Jit Singh, Commissioner Secretary to Govt, Industries and Commerce Department, a two-month Capacity Building and Skill Development Training program for carpet instructors in Jammu division was inaugurated today. The event was organized by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, Srinagar.

Speaking at the Inaugural function, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Director Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu informed that 12 carpet instructors of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Udhampur districts of Jammu division, are undergoing this training programme from January 5, 2024 to enhance their skills, learn to make diverse and durable carpets and have firsthand knowledge of the latest developments made in this sector.

The primary objective of the training program is to cultivate a skilled workforce for carpet weaving. Once trained, these instructors will serve as master trainers, transferring their acquired skills to artisans in their respective areas. This initiative is a crucial step towards revitalizing and rejuvenating carpet weaving in Jammu Division.

Lauding this initiative, Megha Baogia, Deputy Director (Planning) congratulated all instructors for this opportunity and suggested them to make the best of this training. She stressed that this training will enthuse the new vigour and innovation among the carpet instructors which will further revitalize the overall carpet weaving in the entire Jammu division. The inaugural ceremony ended with a round visit by dignitaries.
