As holding a degree or master’s degree certificate is not enough to land a job in this competitive era, the Department of Collegiate Education has decided to introduce skill training courses in the 60 government first grade colleges across Karwar in the first phase.
The department has signed an agreement with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in this regard. The NSDC will impart training to students of postgraduate courses, final year graduation and the alumni. The objective is to prepare the students to get jobs in sectors like IT/ITeS, telecom, healthcare, retail BSFI, tourism and hospitality, media and entertainment.
These courses will be in addition to the graduation and post-graduation courses they are admitted to. The department hopes the initiative will also enable students start their own business in the sectors.
The department recently issued a circular to all the 60 colleges selected for starting the three-month programme soon. Experts from the NSDC will visit the colleges to impart training. Sources in the Government Arts and Science College, Karwar, which is one of the colleges selected, told reporters that the training will not disturb the regular classes. Interested students will be given training during college hours.
While the fee to train each student will be Rs 5,000, the students are told to remit only registration fee. The registration fee for general category students is Rs 500 and RS 250 for SC/STs. However, the alumni will have to pay a full fee of Rs 5,000 to get admitted to the training class.
Principals of the colleges have been told to convince the students to get admitted to the classes. A separate bank account will be opened to make the students pay the registration fee. A placement officer will be appointed in each college to ensure the success of the skill training classes. Students can enroll on-line too.
