Kohima : Skill India in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation organised a one day Workshop on ‘Strengthening Skill and Entrepreneurship Landscape in Nagaland’ at De Oriental Grande Kohima on October 15.
A DIPR report informed that Principal Secretary for Industries & Commerce, Lithrongla G Chishi chaired the workshop and said that the various policies of the Government of India will not only develop the northeast but help the region be at par with the rest of the country. She added that the Act East and Look East policies can be integrated together to take the northeast and the nation forward.
Chishi added that “without skilling and entrepreneurship we cannot take any headway no matter how much polices exists.” She urged the participating departments to help capacity building for future generations.
Director, Employment, Skill Development& Entrepreneurship, Asangla Ao said that this workshop is the first of its kind in Nagaland and that through such flagship skill development programs, many youths from northeast are being skilled across multiple sectors. However, she said that the present skilling programmes have their own limitations and challenges and urged all to understand the needs and aspirations of the youth and formulate feasible and realistic action to ensure that future skilled programmes are outcome driven and aligned to the youth’s aspiration.

Agriculture SSC, Nirod Chakravarty speaking on the way forward said that government’s vision is to improve the quality of life of the rural population, to widen employment opportunities, increase income of farmers for better livelihood, value addition through agro processing and agribusiness and exploit potential organic Farming. He also emphasized to create awareness of farming communities on innovations/techniques, efficient post harvest management, soil testing and modern methods of organic farming. He called upon the stake holders to collaborate with ASCI to facilitate development of trainings/materials through Training Providers and training can be conducted for several suitable job roles in Nagaland.
North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) representative, Sentimongla Ao also presented a power point presentation on the outlook on key policies on skill and enterprise development in the state and how they address Nagaland youth and change requirement. She highlighted the approach to skilling and entrepreneurship programme at the Urban and Rural Service Sectors. She also said that the agency undertook a scoping study to identify potential areas where uptake for services are assured/guaranteed and design the skilling programme accordingly.
She emphasized on providing accessible support centers for youths and to address the need for loans, information, business planning etc. At the same time, she called for a variety of learning opportunities and relevant tools to enhance young employability for work-integrated learning opportunities, internships and apprenticeships. She further suggested having an extracurricular programme on leadership and entrepreneurship in schools and colleges.
Viewpoints on promoting new age Agri- entrepreneurship culture by reinforcing traditional skills with modern technology was presented by the Agriculture Department. Meanwhile, the Horticulture Department presented a perspective on skill requirement for agriculture for an environmentally, socially and economically sound society for the present and the future.
A perspective on employment trends in tourism sectors and other sectors including absorption from traditional livelihoods was presented by the Tourism Department.

The Industries & Commerce Department also shared their perspective on strengthening cooperation among various stakeholders, including through public – private partnerships, for research and development on skills and entrepreneurship, with particular consideration for priority sectors identified for Nagaland and needs of women, youth and marginalised populations.
The Art and Culture Department outlined ways towards preserving art, culture and branding in the present world. This was followed by a presentation from the Fisheries Department. Ways of strengthening public- private and networks of skill / entrepreneurship centers across Nagaland was presented by the Confederation of India Industries, Nagaland Unit.
The Veterinary & Animal Husbandry briefed on key livelihood skill requirement on household activity with primitive rearing, feeding and processing, skill development. Kohima Village Youth Organisation also spoke on possibilities of green revolution and preserving traditional community skills.
Emporium Skill Training institute presented an insight on market acquisition and skill gap, while issues of youth unemployment and migration were highlighted by Kohima Village Students Union.
