Jamshedpur : Jharkhand HRD minister Neera Yadav said that in order to address the problem unemployment especially among the educated youth, the need is to promote skill development programs and said that the government is trying its best to promote skill development programs.
She was addressing at a function organized by Kolhan University at the Jamshedpur Women’s College. A total of 310 students who successfully completed the foundation course of management and soft skills as a part of NUSSD (National University Students Skill Development) program received their certificates.
Saryu Roy, minister of parliamentary affairs, food, public distribution and consumer affairs, Jharkhand; Neera Yadav, minister of human resource development department, Jharkhand; P.M. Nair, chair professor, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai; Nikhil Dhavle, director, NUSSD, TISS along with R.P.P. Singh, vice-chancellor, Kolhan University and college principals were present at the function.
NUSSD, a scheme under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports implemented by Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), started on pilot basis at two girls’ colleges under Kolhan University for a period of three years–2013-2016. The project is managed by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai and based on credit marking. The entire course from teaching to awarding the NUSSD certificate is done by TISS. Since October 2012, TISS on the sanction of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and office of Advisor to the Prime Minister had been working on this project.
Under this scheme, students get the opportunity to learn new vocational skills through this program along with their current bachelor’s degree. The purpose is to make these graduates ready for specific skilled employment as well as provide self-employment opportunities.
Expressing similar opinions Soma Das, a student of Jamshedpur Women’s College, said, “These are the times when wrong planning can spoil your career. We should know the details and the scope of the course we plan to join. I am of the opinion that traditional courses like BA and MA do not help in getting jobs while professional and technical courses provide a lot of avenues”.
