Tirupur : Even while lauding the Centre’s initiatives in providing skill development training to unemployed youth, knitwear exporters in Tirupur cluster have said that such programmes should focus more on existing workers.
“Actually, the skill training programmes should focus more on the existing workforce in clusters such as Tirupur where the workers are mostly self-groomed. If the skills of these workers are fine-tuned, productivity improves as they already know the basic techniques needed for apparel production. Once these workers are given enhanced training, the manufacturers can improve production. This will generate new employment opportunities,” pointed out Raja M. Shanmugam, convener Task Force (Textiles) in Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Citing the importance of focusing the skill development training on the workforce, the exporters had taken their requisition to the notice of the Union Textiles Ministry.
