DFID, Construction Sector Skill Council to conduct Training of Master Trainers program for Construction Sector

The Construction sector employs around 45 million people and is the second largest source of employment in India. While the construction sector is witnessing a 7% Y-o-Y growth, a large part of construction activities happen in the unorganized sector by unskilled workers and the productivities are low. We are witnessing a dearth of skilled resources in the Construction industry over the last decade, and this is widening rapidly over the past few years. India require good trainers and master trainers who can train workers in the sector and improve the quality of working professionals, thereby providing them with better growth opportunities.

During an interactive Industry Round Table on Skilling in Construction Sector conducted on 1-Nov-18 in New Delhi, it was opined that training providers from UK, which have a much more mature Construction sector, could provide valuable contribution in improving the
present curriculum and training pedagogy of these programs, especially in the platform skills.

Taking forward the feedback from the round table, The Department for International Development (DFID)-Government of United Kingdom, and Construction Skill Development Council of India (CSDCI) is organizing a Training of Master Trainers program for Construction Sector. This training programme is jointly conducted by Indian training partner, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and UK training partner, Qualification for Industry (QFI). This would be the first Training of Master Trainers (ToMT) program in the sector aimed at creating lead trainers with international best practices in both domain and platform for the sector having a key role in assuring the quality of training services across and within organizations. These Master Trainers will pass on the knowledge to other Trainers in an exponential way thereby leading to improvement of the training ecosystem.

The training program is being conducted for two level 6 job roles – Supervisor Structures and Supervisor Finishes, which were chosen based on industry demand. The programs will be held at L&T, CSTI Kanchipuram from 18th February 2019 to 28th February 2019. The trainees will get the opportunity to gain 2 certifications from these programs – NSDC Certified Master Trainer (for the specific job role) and QFI Certificate of Learning Achievement in both domain and platform skills.

This framework can also become the foundation for more UK Training institutes to setup permanent centres in India and provide opportunity for Indian Training Providers to collaborate with UK Training Institutes to improve their training pedagogy. More than 30 participants are expected to attend the training programs from various construction organization throughout India. Stakeholders and officials from DFID, CSDCI, L&T, and TN Skill development including British Deputy High Commissioner – Chennai are also expected to attend the valedictory session.

DFID intends to test such pilots in India and plans to scale up successful pilots under their Skills for Jobs program next year.
