Punjab Skill Development Mission to train inmates in 6 prisons of the state

Chandigarh : Aiming at rehabilitation of the prisoners, the Punjab Government would impart training to 1,000 Jail inmates of six identified prisons in the state.

“In a one of its kind initiative, the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM), through the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Enterprise, has got the sanction to train 1000 jail inmates in six identified prisons in Punjab,” said the state Employment Generation and Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Wednesday.

Channi said that the project would go a long way in setting an example for rehabilitation of the jail inmates.

Besides, the State Government would provide training to 50,000 youth of the state under various skill development schemes in 2019-20 by the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM).

What is more, the Mission, in line with the aspirations of the state’s youth for overseas placement, would set up four laboratories in Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda and Jalandhar with the technical assistance with the British Council.

“The laboratories would provide facilities for improving the communication skills, especially that of spoken English of the youth from Punjab,” said Channi.

He said that each laboratory would annually impart such training to 100 youths. “The labs would be set up with a specific objective to equip the trained candidates with employability skills to enhance their prospects of overseas placement,” he said.

The state Principal Secretary (Employment Generation Department)-cum-PSDM mission director DK Tiwari informed that the Mission has till now trained 22,000 youth, while this year, it aims to double the number.

“The youth are currently undergoing training under the Mission in the trades of beauty and wellness, apparel, IT/ITES, healthcare, telecom, retail, electronics, logistics, capital goods and banking and financial services. Nearly 60 percent of the total trained candidates are women,” said Tiwari.

To promote captive placements, the Mission has identified nine manufacturing and service-oriented agencies which have the capacity and bandwidth to train and place candidates within their own establishments.
