Guwahati: Inmates of Jorhat Central Jail were provided skill training as part of the programme, “Karagaror Pora Karikor”, inaugurated at the prison on Monday. In the first such training under the initiative in the state, a short-term skill development training on electricians was inaugurated at the jail by Jorhat deputy commissioner Virendra Mittal.
The 30-day course will provide 360 hours of training to the prison inmates and a certificate will be issued at the end of the training by the Institute Management Committee of Industrial Training Institute Jorhat. The course will enable them to lead a new life as skilled electricians, once they are released from jail.
The training is being provided by the state skill, employment and entrepreneurship department through the directorate of employment and craftsmen training in collaboration with Assam prison headquarters.
In his inaugural speech, Mittal said the training will contribute to the pool of skilled manpower in the state. “This century is the century of knowledge and skill and this course will empower the inmates to be part of this.”
Earlier, jail inmates used to be trained in cane and bamboo furniture- making skills and steel fabrication work.
“This is the first scientific skill training being imparted to prison inmates in the state. The government is laying emphasis on the Karagaror Pora Karikor scheme and it will be extended to other prisons, including the Guwahati jail in the near future”, said director of Employment and Craftsmen Training Rituraj Bora
Jorhat Chief Judicial Magistrate Rani Boro, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (HQ), Principal of Jorhat Engineering College Rita Sarmah, Senior Principal of Jorhat ITI Shashi Hazarika and other dignitaries were present in the inaugural ceremony.
