Ultra modern residential ITI with training capacity 1050 in 17 trades to come up in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam : A state-level industrial training institute (ITI) is being set up in Visakhapatnam with an initial intake of 1,050 students in 17  trades. To meet the industrial needs, the proposed ITI will have the most advanced trades with a skill development centre. The ITI will be a residential one and it will mostly be at Atchutapuram.

During the past one and a half decades, the ratio between the engineers, supervisors and tradesmen was badly disturbed with lakhs of engineering graduates coming out every year. In fact, according to the industrial employment statistics, for one engineer there should be four supervisors and 17 tradesmen in the industrial sector. However, during the past 15 years the engineering colleges have  increased and presently there are over 300 in Andhra Pradesh and producing over a lakh  engineering graduates.

However, the number of ITIs has not increased in the government sector. Except a few, a large number of private ITIs is not in tune with the new trends in the industrial development and augmentation. Huge funds are required to procure equipment and other infrastructure to train the tradesmen.

The government ITIs which have been fully equipped are training tradesmen in limited number. The state government, with its new industrial policy, is expecting new industries to come up in a couple of years.

To train the tradesmen to meet the industrial needs, a state-level ITI was proposed in the district. The Employment and Training department has completed the paper work and sent the proposal to the state government for necessary approval.

“The new residential ITI has proposed to set up in an extent of 15 acres with an estimated cost of `13 crore. We have sent the proposals with an intake of 1,050 students in 17 trades.  The proposal is pending with the government for approval,” said M Gurunadheswara Rao, the regional deputy director, department of Employment and Training.

Sources in the Commissionerate of Employment and Labour have said that the government had already directed the district administration to identify the land to set up the state-level residential ITI. “We do not want to set up a regular ITI.

The proposed ITI will be established with a skill development centre and a startup village also. The government will discuss with industries on HR needs to develop the trainees to ensure placement,” said a senior official.
